Overview of aims and objectives:

The GLP-1 Essentials Course equips personal trainers with the knowledge, confidence, and practical strategies to support clients using GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound. As the popularity of these medications increases, many clients are entering training spaces already experiencing rapid weight loss, reduced appetite, and significant shifts in motivation and body image. Trainers must be prepared to respond professionally, ethically, and effectively — within their defined scope of practice.

This course explores the science behind GLP-1s, common medications and their effects, nutritional and training adaptations, mindset and identity shifts, and red flag scenarios that require referral. It combines evidence-based theory with real-world coaching strategies, helping trainers protect client health, enhance outcomes, and reinforce their unique value in the coaching process. Scope of practice, communication skills, and referral pathways are reinforced throughout.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the biological mechanisms and physiological effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs)
  • Recognise signs and symptoms commonly experienced by GLP-1 users (e.g. nausea, low energy, muscle loss)
  • Apply safe, in-scope training adaptations to preserve muscle mass and support client function
  • Understand common nutritional issues experienced by GLP-1 clients and provide appropriate behavioural support (e.g. hydration, balanced nutritional intake, structured meals)
  • Support client mindset shifts including changes in food reward, goal orientation, identity, and confidence
  • Recognise red flag scenarios such as extreme under-eating, dizziness, or disordered behaviours and know when and how to refer
  • Maintain alignment with AusActive’s scope of practice guidelines for fitness professionals
  • Navigate sensitive client questions around medications, body image, and withdrawal in a professional manner
  • Collaborate with allied health professionals (e.g. GPs, dietitians) and build a referral network for client safety
